WESTERN LEAGUE First Division round-up week 31

Western LeaguelogoTable topping Sherborne overcame a late rally at Wells City to maintain their seven-point lead and extend their unbeaten league run to 16 games.

Andy Crabtree's Warminster Town and Chris Wise's Wincanton Town - the last side to beat Sherborne - also extended their unbeaten First Division runs to 16 games.

Wayne Jerome's high-scoring Zebras were at their fluent best during the opening half and led 3-0 at the interval thanks to goals from Declan Cornish, Alex Murphy and Ash Guppy.

Wells got themselves a way back into the game when Charlie Moon managed to pull a goal back for the home side on 75 minutes. Adam Wright reduced the deficit to just one a couple of moments later, but then with the pressure being applied further, Sherborne put the game to bed with Murphy scoring his second of the afternoon to wrap up a 4-2 win.

Second placed Warminster rallied from 1-0 down to beat Cheddar 2-1 with skipper Ian Jeffery proving to be the difference between the two sides.

Fin Biggs fired Cheddar in front after five minutes before Jeffery levelled from the spot on 70. Jeffery doubled his tally on 76 minutes to take Warminster’s impressive winning streak into double figures.

Third placed Welton Rovers survived a red card before scoring a late winner to edge a 2-1 victory at Bristol side AEK Boco.

Having gone in front after 13 minutes through Toby Cole, everything seemed to unravel for Welton early in the second half, with Lewis Hunt booked twice in quick succession, after the hosts had drawn level through Josh Jenkins.

The Green Army regrouped and claimed an 88th minute winner when Courtney Charles headed home Cam Allen’s corner.

Fourth placed Wincanton Town won 3-1 at Odd Down.

Dan Wise and Tom Richardson put the Wasps 2-0 up before Luke Bryan halved the deficit for the Bath side on the hour.

Wise was the hero on the day for Wincanton, and his second set piece goal of the day proved crucial, restoring his side’s two-goal advantage on 75 minutes.

Longwell Green Sports drew 3-3 at Bristol Telephones. Zac Feltham scored twice for Green who led 2-1 at half time but Phones new signing Jack Creaney scored twice to make an instant impact for this new side and ensure the points were shared.

Bristol side Lebeq United soared to seventh with a 5-1 home win over Bishops Lydeard.

From the moment Josh Williams converted his 30th minute spot kick, Lebeq kicked into overdrive, with Neikell Plummer and Williams again striking soon after to make it 3-0 in no time at all. Paulo Borges pulled a goal back for the away side in first half stoppage time, but Lebeq ran away with the game in the closing stages with Jennison Williams notching a late double.

Another side who scored a big win were Oldland Abbotonians, with a strong second half showing helping them beat Gillingham Town 4-1.

Jake Reader opened the scoring following a strong surging run from teammate Andy Nash. Reader then nodded home an Aaron Mansfield set piece to double Abbots’ lead, before Nash and Cash Vinall added further gloss to the scoreline in the final 20 minutes.

Portishead Town leapfrogged Bristol rivals Almondsbury in the league table after surging to a 4-1 win thanks to goals by Joe Fitzgerald, Calum Townsend, Rob Latham and sub Dan Parslow.

Tytherington Rocks and Hengrove Athletic drew 0-0 while Bishop Sutton drew 2-2 with bottom side Devizes Town.
