WESTERN LEAGUE First Division round-up week 34

Leaders Sherborne strengthened their position at the Western League First Division summit thanks to a 2-0 top of the table win over third placed Warminster Town at Raleigh Grove.

The eagerly-anticipated clash was decided during a five-minute spell at the beginning of the second half, when Josh Williams scored twice to clinch a crucial win for the Zebras.

Sherborne surged 12 points clear of second placed Welton Rovers, who didn't play at the weekend and have three games in hand on the runaway leaders.

The league’s leading scorer Luke Bryan was on target yet again during sixth placed Odd Down’s 2-1 win away at second bottom Bishops Lydeard.

Bryan's 31st goal of the season set the Bath side on their way after half an hour, before Lydeard responded just before the interval when Adam Willis struck from long range to make it 1-1.

It looked as though the points would be shared but Odd Down's Shaquille Perkins had other ideas and scored a stoppage time winner.

The only other side to win away were 10th placed Cheddar, quick out of the blocks on their way to a 4-1 mid-table triumph at ninth placed Oldland Abbotonians.

Robbi Maggs fired the Cheesemen ahead in just the third minute. Maggs was then hauled down in the box with Rick Bennett firing home from the spot to make it 2-0.

Cheddar continued to push for goals and only had to wait a couple more minutes with Ethan Reed scoring in the 20th minute to put them out of sight.

Cheese keeper Kieran Webster saved an Oldland penalty but finally lost his clean sheet when Andy Nash reduced the deficit on 70 minutes.

Cheddar had the last word when Reed claimed his second of the afternoon.

Late goals from Keith Kearney and Jacob Bird enabled 11th placed Bishop Sutton to beat Bristol Telephones 2-0 at Lakeview.

Josh Honey’s 42nd minute goal was enough for 15th placed Portishead to beat Bristol rivals AEK Boco 1-0.

The biggest scorers of the day were 16th placed Gillingham Town, who beat 18th placed Almondsbury 7-1 in Dorset.

Basement side Devizes finished 2-2 at 12th placed Tytherington Rocks despite leading twice.

Having already seen Ethan Witchell’s effort cancelled out by their hosts, Devizes went back in front after 70 minutes through Sam Hughes.

Just like the first time around, Tytherington ace Laurene Lefeve managed to conjure another leveller, the second just three minutes from time.

In the Les Phillips Cup, Premier Division Shepton Mallet defeated First Division top four outfit Wincanton 3-0 with goals from Joe Morgan, Danny Constable and Callum Gould.
