Aaron Seviour’s goal from the first move of the second half proved to be the difference but Shepton Mallet acknowledged they had been fortunate to record their fifth successive league win.
Brown said: “There’s a real mixture of emotions after the result, and to be fair any of them would be acceptable feelings after the game.
“There’s frustration that we didn’t take the chances we created in the first half to win the game, there’s anger that we’ve conceded a terrible goal to lose the game and there’s optimism that we’ve created so many chances in that first half and played very well in that period as well.
“But ultimately I’m just so disappointed for the players that we’ve lost a game that we didn’t really deserve to lose.
“There is a glimmer of the same feelings we were frequently experiencing this time last year, when we were playing well but somehow not winning the game.
“I have to take responsibility for the goal, we conceded an identical goal really to Barnstaple last week, from our own throw in deep in our half.
“We have the Veo camera and we do so much analysis after each game as we strive to improve, and why I haven’t highlighted that goal this week using the video I don’t know, it’s so poor from me.”
He went on: “Everything was positive in the first 45, we created some great chances, Thommo should probably have a couple given his quality and he’ll be frustrated at that knowing him.
“Callum’s had a great header just wide of the post and the half time whistle came at the wrong time.
“We knew there would be a reaction from them, because even though Shepton showed quality at times, with all due respect to them they weren’t really at the races and we heard them getting it at half time.
“But the lads have come out with their heads in the clouds for some reason and not been ready, and conceded after 30 seconds or so, and they know that is not acceptable.
“Our response was then poor, you see it time and again when you should be a goal or two to the good, then get hit by a sucker punch and it knocks you off your stride, but we are disappointed we had 44 minutes to find out rhythm again and we didn’t test the goalkeeper second half.
“So I’m not saying we deserve to win the game, because you get what you deserve at this level, but to lose it is a real sickener.
“Credit to Mallet though, what a start they’ve had. They’re not conceding goals and winning games and that tells its own story.
“But we’ve now played four top teams in the last two weeks or so, and have more than matched them on the whole.
“We have dropped points off the back of a set piece in each game and it’s those fine margins that have cost us but we are still learning all the time and it fills me with optimism that it’s those fine margins costing us, and we aren’t being blown away.
“As long as we are prepared to suck it up and learn then it won’t be long before those fine margins are going our way.”
