LEAGUE ONE Plymouth Argyle 1 Oxford Utd 0

Second half substitute Morgan Whittaker fired third placed Plymouth Argyle to their fourth League One win on the spin, 1-0 over Oxford United at rain-lashed Home Park.

Fellow sub Niall Ennis’ shot on the turn inside the box was blocked but when the ball fell to Whittaker on the edge of the area he rifled into the bottom corner through a crowd of players.

Oxford had an immediate chance to respond but striker Kyle Joseph’s effort flew off the top of the bar as he slid in to connect with Sam Long’s pacy cross from the right on a lightning counter.

Argyle had the better of first half chances as the rain poured down.

In a well worked set piece, home skipper Joe Edwards headed across the face of goal and striker Ryan Hardie headed just over.

Oxford keeper Simon Eastwood made a superb save to deny Finn Azaz as he connected with Adam Randell’s low corner.

The ball then fell invitingly to Edwards, whose angled drive flew just wide of the far post.

Hardie also teed up Azaz, who fired wide.

Edwards and Hardie combined early in the second half to tee up Bali Mumba but his goal-line attempt was ushered away by Eastwood.

Matt Butcher’s first time effort from the edge of the box flew over from another Randell corner as Argyle upped their game.

The double substitution was the key to unlock united's resolute defence.

Whittaker gave an indication of what was to come with a spectacular scissor kick effort within minutes of his 62nd minute introduction along with impressive Ennis.
