SWPL EAST Axminster Town 0 Ivybridge Town 2

SWPL logoIvybridge Town made it 10 wins from 11 matches in the South West Peninsula League with a 2-0 victory away to Axminster on Saturday.

That result sees them retain top spot in the East Division on goal difference from second placed Dartmouth while Ivybridge also have a game in hand.

First half goals from Mitch Williams and Luke Forward saw Ivybridge collect their fourth successive win since suffering their only defeat of the season at the hands of Bovey Tracey on September 14 and they have kept three clean sheets in those four games.

Ivies manager Darren Stewart was delighted with the performance of his young Ivybridge players against Axminster, commenting: “Axminster are a good side with a lot of experience and I expect them to be there or thereabouts at the end of the season.”

Ivybridge dominated the game from the start and took the lead on the half hour with a fine volley from defender Williams.

They added a second 10 minutes later when Forward curled the ball inside the far post direct from a corner.

There will be another tough test for Ivybridge tomorrow evening when they visit in-form Brixham, 2-0 winners at fourth placed Okehampton Argyle on Saturday.

In fact, fifth placed Brixham raced into a 2-0 lead when they played at Erme Valley early this season, but Ivybridge settled to hit back for a 3-2 win that evening.

Stewart says: “Although we have beaten Brixham already this season, they have made a couple of signings and are one of the favourites to do well. It will be up to us to impose our game on the opposition.”

The next home fixture for Ivybridge will be on Saturday (Oct 8) when Holsworthy, currently second from the bottom of the table, are due to visit Erme Valley.
