It was a tough encounter played at a frenetic pace and was a match in which both managers possibly felt their side should have taken all three points. On balance, however, the draw was probably a fair result.
Ivybridge dictated the early play but Spurs came back into the game as the interval approached. The breakthrough for Ivybridge came on the stroke of half-time with Fletcher Williams scoring from a right-wing corner by Luke Forward.
Boosted by their goal, Ivybridge started well again in the second half, but then Spurs began pressing for an equaliser and were rewarded in the 70th minute with a goal from Stuart Morgan who took advantage after Ivybridge goalkeeper Kane Gregory had spilled the ball.
Ivybridge manager Darren Stewart admitted: “In fairness, Newton Abbot Spurs deserved to get back in the game but we held on for a point and also had a couple of good opportunities to have won the game in the closing stages.”
The draw sees Ivybridge two points clear at the top of the table from second-placed Dartmouth, who have a game in hand.
Ivybridge now take a break from league action with two cup games before their next league game at home to Dartmouth on Wednesday, October 26.
On Saturday (Oct 15) they visit Launceston in the Walter C Parson League Cup and the following Saturday (Oct 22) they are away to Bovey Tracey in the FA Vase.
Stewart will use the break to keep his squad fresh explaining: “We will use the opportunity to get minutes into as many of the squad as possible. We want to keep everyone fresh.”
But Stewart stresses the importance of the League Cup game against Launceston, recalling that Ivybridge lost to runners-up St Blazey in the semi-final at Liskeard last season, adding: “We reached the semi-final last season and it is a competition that we take very seriously.”
