Vale took the lead from a 65th minute corner when Nathan Smith’s goal-bound header was deflected past home keeper Michael Cooper by Wilson.
Within six minutes Vale had doubled their lead with Wilson firing home on the spin after latching on to substitute Dennis Politic’s pass down the left.
On 72 minutes Ennis’ shot beat diving Stevens but cannoned off the foot of the post as Argyle piled on late pressure, with two efforts cleared off the line.
In the first half Danny Butterworth’s thumping eighth minute volley had to be turned over the bar by Cooper.
Five minutes later the Argyle keeper was again called into action, to smoother another thumping shot from Butterworth as he cut in from the left.
Bali Mumba came close to opening Argyle’s account on 41 minutes after exchanging passes with Niall Ennis in the box and firing inches wide.
Ennis had a thumping deflected strike well saved by keeper Jack Stevens before striker Ryan Hardie skied the bouncing ball over, clipping the bar just before half time.
After they went 2-0 down Argyle piled forward, and Vale had to remain stubbornyl resolute to keep the league leaders at bay.
Second placed Ipswich conceded a sixth minute stoppage time leveller at home to Fleetwood, meaning Argyle head into the weekend a point clear of the summit ahead of third placed Sheffield Wednesday's 1230 start at Derby County today.
A Wednesday Saturday win would see them take over at the top on goal difference...
