SWPL EAST Williams keeps Ivies on promotion course

Ivys 600x600Fletcher Williams' ninth goal of the season enabled Ivybridge to extend their winning South West Peninsula League run with a 1-0 victory at Holsworthy.

A fourth successive league win for Ivybridge keeps them third in the East Division table, eight points behind leaders Okehampton with three games in hand.

The Ivies remain on course for a top four promotion position with a 12-point advantage over fifth-placed Newton Abbot Spurs.

Ivybridge manager Darren Stewart was particularly pleased with the result, saying: “Holsworthy is always a difficult place, so to come away with anything is good.”

The aim was to start on the front foot and the players obliged with Lewis Dickson winning possession and setting up Williams to score after only eight minutes.

Stewart added: “The first half was competitive with Holsworthy working hard. The half-time talk was for us to be a bit more direct, and we dominated the second half.

“We had a good 45 minutes during which we had a goal disallowed for offside and what looked like a clear-cut penalty was not given. Although it was only 1-0, I never thought we were going to concede a goal.”

Next up for Ivybridge is another away match against bottom-of-the-table Elmore on Saturday with Stewart warning his players against any complacency.

“Elmore may be struggling but we know that all teams in this league are more than capable of getting a result. We need to go there with the right attitude if we want to keep our winning run going.”
