CORNWALL SENIOR CUP Millbrook AFC 2 Wendron Utd 0

Don’t tell anyone at Millbrook that the Cornwall Senior Cup is not an important competition in modern day local football.

The way they celebrated after beating a very good Wendron side at a wet and windy Burngullow Park on Tuesday night underlined how much it meant to them as a club.

Goals from Jake Foster (16 minutes) and Kieran O’Melia (78) sent them through to an Easter Monday final against Western League rivals Helston, who just happen to boast former Millbrook favourites Rikki Shepherd and Tom Payne in their ranks.

It promises to be a cracker at St Blazey AFC on April 10.

Millbrook boss Macca Brown said: “It’s just a fantastic feeling. It’s a competition we’ve set our sights on for a number of seasons now.

“I think as a team who can beat anyone on their day we very much fit the old fashioned ‘cup team’ mould but I don’t think we’ve necessarily always handled this competition well enough.

“Even this season, I think we struggled in earlier rounds with the expectation we placed on ourselves to beat sides from the division below, and struggled against Launceston in particular, but last night we finally brought our level to a game in the Senior Cup.

“I think we fully deserved the victory. The first five minutes or so were a bit cagey from both teams as we had to work out not only each other but the conditions as well.

“Wendron had a good chance at the back post but I think from that point on we really took control and were excellent in the first half.

“The only negative was that we only had one goal to show for it, but we were playing well and knew there would be more chances in the second half.

“We asked for authority at half time, not just to go out and cower into our shells and be on the back foot holding on, and I think the lads delivered that.

“The midfield three were outstanding breaking up play, moving the ball out of the hotspot and controlling the game, even at times without the ball, and the back four really handled the threat of Wendron’s pace well.

“The second goal couldn’t come soon enough just to give us that extra cushion, I don’t think we were looking too troubled but in those conditions it only takes one crazy moment and the game changes.

“We had to wait to the 78th minute, but it made the last 10 minutes a little less tense and we managed it really well.”

And what of the final against Helston?

Brown said: “So here we are in the senior cup final for only the third time in the club’s history I believe and we have a chance to make history for the club.

“There’s no doubt it will be a tough game, ourselves and Helston couldn’t be any further apart in terms of resources as everyone knows and keeps telling me, but none of that matters when you cross the white line and it’s 11 v 11.

“All I know is I have a group of players who continue to upset the odds, it’s what we’ve done for seven years here.

“They’re committed to the game, and have been incredibly loyal to me and the club in some really tough moments and they deserve the big occasions like this.

“Now it’s just about going out and making it one better.”
