SWPL EAST Honiton Town 1 Ivybridge Town 1

Ivys 600x600LEADING scorer Jordan Ewing hit his 24th goal of the season to earn Ivybridge Town a point from their South West Peninsula League match at Honiton.

It proved a mixed afternoon for Ivybridge, who fell behind in the 26th minute when Kyle Howell pounced to open the scoring after central defender Todd Hanrahan failed with attempted back pass on the soft surface.

Ivybridge manager Darren Stewart admitted: “We did not want to concede a goal and give Honiton the opportunity to hold on to a lead. But Todd was trying to do the right thing and keep the ball alive because we like to play from the back.”

Despite the disappointment of trailing at the interval, Ivybridge battled back and dominated the second half with Ewing equalising in the 62nd minute.

Stewart added: “Once we equalised, we could have gone on to win the game. In fact, there was only going to be one winner, but we could not find the finishing touch. As far as I am concerned, it was a case of two points dropped.”

Ivybridge had a goal disallowed with referee Dillon Gascoigne ruling that the home goalkeeper had been impeded. Then Ewing was upended but the referee dismissed appeals for a penalty.

That resulted in a further blow for Ivybridge with Ewing receiving a second yellow card for comments made to the referee at the end of the game. It means he will be suspended for one game – probably at Teignmouth this Saturday.

The result means Ivybridge drop to fourth place in the East Division table, being overtaken by Brixham, who won 6-0 at home to Torridgeside, but Ivybridge still have a four-point advantage over fifth-placed Axminster, who have a game in hand.

Ivybridge have a blank week before continuing their run of away fixtures at Teignmouth, followed by trips to Bovey Tracey on Tuesday (April 4) and Elburton Villa on Good Friday (April 7).

There is a midweek date at Erme Valley, however, as Ivybridge hosts this week's Walter C Parson League Cup semi-final between Liskeard and Newton Abbot Spurs on Tuesday.
