CHAMPIONSHIP Plymouth Argyle 3 Luton Town 1

Netherlands Under 21 international Ibrahim Cissoko scored twice as Wayne Rooney’s Argyle beat Luton to rise to 13th in the Championship.

Nijemegen born Cissoko, 21, went solo to follow up his first, blocked shot to fired home past floored, Hatters keeper Thomas Kaminski, and in the opposite corner in the third of seven minutes stoppage time.

Argyle went 2-0 up with a brilliant 69th minute counter-attack as on-loan Leeds United midfielder Darko Gyabi broke from his deep in his own half, running the length of the field, putting Luton’s defenders on the back foot before releasing Dutch left winger Cissoko on the right.

Substitute Cissoko - on a season-long loan from French top flight club Toulouse - cut inside before sending a shot wide of Kaminski inside the far post.

Luton responded in the next attack with impressive Alfie Doughty crossing from the left for substitute Victor Moses to hammer home, past Argyle keeper Dan Grimshaw, at the far post on 71 minutes.

Plymouth-born midfielder Adam Randell let fly on the run with a 25 yard rising shot that beat Kaminski but crashed back off the bar on 87 minutes as the home side sought a two-goal cushion.

Swedish playmaker Rami Al Hajj marked his first start for Plymouth with a superb opening eighth minute goal in Argyle’s first meaningful attack.

The 23-year-old Lebanon-born midfielder first timed a cross from Scottish striker Ryan Hardie into the top corner, giving diving Kaminski little chance.

Hatters defender Mark McGuiness head just over at the far post from an 11th minute corner.

Argyle should have gone two goals up in the 12th minute but after another flowing move, Michael Obafemi swept his thumping shot wide from inside the box as he met Morgan Whittaker’s cross from the right.

Still Argyle pushed for a second and Hardie should have done better when he cut in from the right, again, but miscued his 20th minute shot.

El Hajj, who was having a memorable debut, teed up Whittaker in the 22nd minute but the Argyle favourite’s shot drifted wide from the edge of the box.

A minute later El Hajj was on hand to redirect Gyabi’s wayward shot from a Randell corner, forcing a magnificent one handed diving save from Kaminski.

Luton countered as the half wore on with a succession of corners, but found Argyle’s central defensive duo Lewis Gibson and Kornel Szucs in top form.

The closest the Hatters came to levelling was when Elijah Adebayo headed just over from Doughty’s 37th minute free kick.

Doughty was on hand to clear when Kaminski made a superb save to keep out Joe Edwards’ 39th minute first time shot to meet Bali Mumba’s cross.

Argyle keeper Dan Grimshaw had to be on his toes to keep out Doughty’s inswinging 54th minute corner, which looked set to creep in at the near post.

McGuiness headed just over – from another pinpoint Doughty flag kick – on the hour.

Adebayo forced Grimshaw to save low at his near post from an angled shot, from the left, on 67 minutes.

Two minutes later Argyle surged further ahead...
