City’s last league defeat was 2-1 at promotion rivals Lincoln on December 20.
Fit-again Argyle top scorer Lorent Tolaj fired the greens ahead on 28 minutes.
Recalled Tolaj latched on to a superb through ball from in-form strike partner Bim Pepple before firing home from the edge of the box.
Pepple then ran on to skipper Joe Edwards’ through ball to make it 2-0 in the 31st minute.
Omari Kellyman reduced the deficit with a left-foot finish before Pepple headed his second goal of the game from a Wes Harding cross on 34 minutes.
Kellyman scored his second goal of the game, with another superb left footed finish, from Perry Ng’s pass in the 43rd minute.
Tolaj restored Argyle's two-goal lead in the 68th minute, from the penalty spot, after being fouled by Cardiff skipper Calum Chambers. It was the Switzerland striker’s 17th goal of the season.
Mathias Ross headed Argyle’s fifth goal from Curtis’ 82nd minute corner to crown the greens best home league performance since a 6-2 Championship win over Norwich in September 2023.
Cardiff’s Chris Willock missed a second minute chance to score at the far post as the ball sped across the face of Conor Hazard’s goal.
At the other end, Caleb Watts shot was well saved by Nathan Trott as he latched on to a Tolaj through ball in the penalty area.
Malachi Boateng won the ball on edge of the area and looped a shot from 20 yards just over the bar on 11 minutes.
Bim Pepple’s header deflected off a defender and the crossbar from a 15th minute Curtis corner from the left.
From the next Curtis corner, from the right, Tolaj’s volley flew down the sidenetting. It was that close to an opening goal.
Ollie Tanner’s angled 28th minute shot across the box beat Hazard but flew off the far post, with the keeper saving the follow-up shot.
It was a warning shot of the goal rush to follow in the misty rain.
