Back to back defeats have left Torquay United on the brink of relegation from the National League.
United have four must-win final league games ahead of them – kicking off at home to FC Halifax Town on Saturday – if they are to stand any chance of avoiding relegation to National League South.
With four games to go Gary Owers’ third from bottom United are eight points adrift of Woking, currently occupying the 20th “safety” spot which would ensure National League top flight football next term.
Woking, who led 1-0 at Maidenhead before a 2-1 defeat last night, also have the added advantage of a superior goal difference to United, beaten 3-1 at home by promotion chasing AFC Fylde despite taking a merited 1-0 fifth minute lead through Brett Williams’ calmly converted penalty, won by strike partner Jamie Reid.
Williams looked set to make it 2-0 from a 20 yard strike before Jay Lynch palmed the ball out of the top corner.
Games, seasons turn on such moments... and so it proved.

Jack Muldoon levelled as 24-goal Danny Rowe’s drive looped up and into his path on 24 minutes and unmarked central defender Jordan Tunnicliffe dived in at the far post to head home a 28th minute corner from the right.
Joint league top scorer Rowe was kept at bay in the Bay but Tunnicliffe was first to react to Simon Grand’s pinpoint left-wing cross into the six yard box in the 78th minute to head home as the Coasters coasted home and up to fourth.
Plainmoor’s pitch – which passed two early inspections and a third cursory check by spot-on match referee Savvas Yianni – was not a pretty sight at the close but far from as cut-up as loyal Gulls supporters left wondering how it has come to this…
