Lowe said: “I always believed the boys coming on as subs are going to get us one final chance and that’s what happened.”
Joel Grant helped on fellow substitute Conor Grant’s cross and central defender Niall Canavan swooped to score a stoppage time winner.
Canavan was architect of the 23rd minute opening goal, sending the ball across field to the right where Byron Moore’s shot looped up off Tyler Denton and in.
Stevenage levelled when Elliott List profited from a similar pass from Boro central defender Ben Nugent.
Lowe said: “In the first half I thought we should have been out of sight.
“That’s been the case for probably the large part of the season.
“The resilience and the character of the lads shone through in the second half.
“We knew Stevenage were going to be tough, tough to break down, they were solid, resolute as a Graham Westley team are.
“I was just pleased with the boys to find that winner.
“Flowing movement that’s us in a nutshell.
“We like to play that style of fast, passing football.
“First half it was quick, second half it wasn’t so quick but we keep believing that we will get one more chance.
“We know we are always going to create chances. That’s a given.
“It’s just great that last little bit. You know your defender who has been as solid as a rock for us then pops up there in the 96th minute to get the winner.
“I was pleased to score with 30 seconds to go. It’s a big plus for us because we haven’t had one of those yet this season, it’s gone against us quite a bit but now it’s gone for us.
“Niall’s done brilliant for us, he’s different class. I don’t like singling anyone out because individuals get praise of me and the coaching staff for what they do and they all play their part.
“But it’s nice when you can praise one or two individuals now and again.”
Lowe revealed he hopes to make a new signing before Wednesday's New Year's Day clash with Swindon, seeking to bounce back from a 2-0 defeat at Port Vale.
