The Nottingham-born former Shrewsbury and Sheffield Wednesday central defender will be an observer as City visit another of his former clubs, Middlesbrough, tonight (1900ko).
Pearson, 57, will officially take charge of the Robins tomorrow, ahead of Saturday's Championship clash at Swansea (1500).
He will work with City assistant head coaches Keith Downing and Paul Simpson.
Initially Pearson has agreed a deal with City until the end of May.
The new City boss says: "I sincerely hope this will be the start of a positive journey for us all."
In a twitter message to Robins fans, Pearson added: "I'm delighted to be back in management and working for Bristol City, a proud, progressive football club. I will give my all to improve our fortunes."
