FA CUP Buckland prepares for Romans invasion

It is FA Cup second round qualifying day today and for some non-League teams across the country there will be few bigger football Saturdays.

Mid-Devon’s Western League newcomers Buckland Athletic host Blue Square Bet South side Bath City (Homers Heath, Newton Abbot 1500) in one of the region’s stand-out ties.

City are highly regarded in non-League circles for their own cup giant-killing exploits, today Athletic need to cause an upset to progress past Adie Britton's Romans.

Britton was at Homers Heath to see the free scoring Bucks beat Plymouth Parkway 5-1 in a replay to secure today's eye-catching tie.

Bucks player-manager Antony Lynch admits: “It’s a massive day for the club. It’s the furthest we have ever been in the FA Cup and, in that respect, also the biggest game the club has played in its history.

“Anyone who plays non-League football knows all about Bath and how well they have done in the FA Cup.

“They are going to be pre-match favourites and for the first time in the cup this season we will start as underdogs.

“I guess the main thing is to settle in during the first 20 minutes and see how it goes. I am glad we have home advantage and really hope we get a huge home support because it is going to be a big test for us.

“Some of the boys have never played at this round in the cup before or against a Conference South side, so it’s going to be a new experience but one they are all really looking forward to.

“My phone hasn’t stopped going with texts and calls about the game, it’s certainly got people talking.”
