TOUCHLINE TUESDAY Dray and Villis step up at Taunton

heads-up! non league touchline Tuesday action courtesy of Corsham's John Cuthbertson Focus for many non-League real football fans tonight will be on the four outstanding regional FA Cup preliminary round replays, especially with the first qualifying round just four days away.

Although another preliminary round tie – in the Southern League Challenge Cup – means newly promoted Premier side Taunton Town first team coaches Rob Dray and Matty Villis make their managerial debut at home to newly promoted South 1 Street FC following the departure of Leigh Robinson and Michael Meaker to Truro City. Dray and Villis step up with immediate effect and the support of positive Peacocks chairman Kevin Sturmey.

Forward-thinking Sturmey - who doubles as the club groundsman - says: “History cannot be changed and we focus on the future. Sometimes a perceived setback can turn in to a positive as our structure perhaps needed tweaking both on and off the pitch. We aren’t inventing the wheel, we just need to fine tune it. The players are the same, Rob and Matt are the same, the board is the same – we now need to deal with the future and recruit to complement what we have, not knee jerk, react and rush to appoint.”

Tonight's tie kicks off at 1945 at the Viridor Stadium.

In the FA Cup, Lydney Town bid to create club history tonight with a win over Royal Wootton Bassett, who have already made three first qualifying round appearances.

The Hellenic Premier sides drew 0-0 in their first cup encounter but if Mark Lee’s Forest of Dean side were to win on home soil tonight they would make a first ever first qualifying round appearance at Wessex Premier Lymington Town on Saturday. Bassett will have other ideas.

Unbeaten Hellenic Premier pace setters Wantage Town – five league wins from six - bid for a cup upset against Gloucestershire’s Slimbridge AFC after their initial 1-1 draw with the Southern League 1 South Swans at Wisloe Road.

Elsewhere tonight Bristol Manor Farm host Southern League South 1 opponents Bideford and Southern Premier newcomers Swindon Supermarine are at home to One Central AFC Dunstable.

Touchline Tuesdays – they take some beating…
