Gary Johnson's promotion-chasing Gulls head to title rivals Woking on Saturday buoyed by a five-match winning streak following well-crafted goals by playmaker Connor Lemonheigh-Evans, striker Jamie Reid and sub Jake Andrews.
United carried on where they left off from Saturday's 3-2 home win over an impressive Wealdstone side... on the front foot.
Fourth placed Chelmsford, who have promotion ambitions of their own, cancelled out Lemonheigh-Evans 25th minute opener before half time - through Jamar Reynolds 32nd minute leveller - but had no answer to United's attacking resolve in the second half.
Reid had a 48th minute penalty well saved by Clarets no 1 Harry Wright before player of the match Ruairi Keating crossed for his strike partner to make it 2-1 with a close range finish on 65 minutes.
Keating then crossed - again from the right - for Andrews to ensure victory with a superb 78th minute diving header.
Lemonheigh-Evans went solo to score United's opener after that man Keating won a header to set up the midfielder, who ended his mazy, incisive run with a crisp finish that gave Wright no chance.
United have now won five league games on the bounce since losing 2-1 at home to basement side Weston-super-Mare a month ago.
Woking were held 1-1 at Bath City on Saturday to slip further behind the Gulls in the race for automatic promotion.
