NON-LEAGUE Football blazes back...

Blazing skies

St Blazey 8 Torrington 3

The love affair is back on.
They say absence makes the heart grow fonder and after an enforced five month break from being able to attend local football, it was a happy return.
The drive to Blaise Park was one filled with anticipation and even parking the car behind the clubhouse felt good.
It helped the sun was shining and the picturesque surroundings of the home of St Blazey AFC provided the stage for my return.
Planted myself by the fence separating the ground from the railway line and settled back for a gentle 90 minutes of pre-season football in front of a crowd of about 50 people.
What the teams served up was so keenly contested it was difficult to remember this was a pre-season "warm-up".
Within 20 minutes Torrington were 2-0 ahead thanks to Adam Smith’s double strike and he looked in for a good day before suffering a knee injury.
Blazey soon got a goal back but the visitors, playing a neat passing game, restored their two-goal cushion. The way Blazey were defending you sensed it wouldn’t be the end of Torrington scoring.
The home side pulled a goal back just before the break and equalised early in the second half to set up a cracking second half.
At 3-3 Torrington responded positively with a spell of pressure which should have brought a goal - yet Blazey responded with five goals in the last half hour to win at a canter.
The best of those was scored by Jake Miller, one of Blazey's summer signings from local rivals St Austell.
Spotting the Torrington keeper off his line, Miller lifted his shot from the halfway line, over the keeper and into the net.
If he scores a better goal all season, it will be worth seeing.
All in all, an entertaining afternoon of non-league football, whetting the appetite for more serious encounters once the league season starts in the first week of September.
And honestly, I can’t wait...
