Goalless turn of year signals Millbrook improvement

Millbrook AFC LogoTwo goalless games don’t sound very festive or much fun – but Millbrook manager Macca Brown was relatively happy with 0-0 Western League Premier draws at home to Torpoint and away to Wellington over the holiday period.

Brown recognises the value in being able to keep a clean sheet or two. After all, all successful teams are built from the back and if you don’t concede, you’ll find you don’t lose many games.

Brown said: “It was a solid spell, and solid is not something we’ve really been this season, so I’m happy with that.

“Of course we would have wanted more in terms of points but I’m really pleased with aspects of our performances over the two games.

“They’re always tricky games because there are so many variables that come into play which can disrupt performances, with the Christmas and New Year celebrations in full flow.

“But I can’t praise the lads enough, because the best evidence of their preparation ahead of the two games is two excellent performances in terms of concentration and two clean sheets.”

After being frustrated by the goalless Boxing Day draw at home to neighbours Torpoint, Brown was far more pleased with Monday's 0-0 draw at Wellington which ushered in the New Year and a new resolve.

He said: “We were well organised and the concentration levels were immaculate.

“Our away record this season is poor, we’ve conceded an average of three goals a game which is a disaster really, so that had to be rectified and we showed good signs of that.

“We had the two or three chances in the first half to score, we didn’t take them, but our defensive performance was on a level where it didn’t cost us, so that’s pleasing, especially in the last 10 minutes when we were again down to 10 men with a sin bin.

“So on the whole I’m pleased, football didn’t ruin my Christmas like it could have done and we can look forward to Saltash on Saturday.

“There is more of a local feel to January and February so it’s a couple of months we are really looking forward to...”

Brown's side head to table-topping Saltash 12th in the Western League top flight at just over the halfway stage of their season.

That short local derby trip precedes four home games in a row at Jenkins Park, kicking off with a Cornwall Senior Cup date against Liskeard Athletic on Tuesday, 1930ko.

Saturday Western Prem games against Cadbury Heath (January 14) Mousehole (Jan 21) and Welton Rovers (Jan 28) follow.
