NEXT ON THE TEE . . . GET INTO GOLF!

Golf development officers from across the region will be urging newcomers to “get into golf” this week.

All six South West counties will be taking part in a huge regional drive to get more people playing golf.

Cornwall Golf Week and Devon Golf Week tees off today and runs until Sunday with scores of free taster sessions across both counties.

County golf development officers Simon Wood (Cornwall) and Craig Townsend (Devon) have already been pro-active in encouraging hundreds of people to pick up golf clubs for the first time.

This week they will spread that message even further, with the assistance of golf clubs and professionals across the two counties.

Saltash-based Wood said: “Cornwall Golf Week is going to be fantastic for introducing new people to the game and with it coming straight after the Masters at Augusta, I am hoping it will be even more successful than last year’s event.

“The great thing is that it is holiday time and so families all get together; and this is something they can all do as a family because there are so many opportunities to pop along to a free taster session.

“With it being the Easter holidays there are also many tourists in the area and they are free to join in and try golf for the first time.

“The aim is to give people an idea of what golf is about – and it’s all free.”

In Cornwall there are some 70 sessions of free golf coaching on offer during Cornwall Golf Week.

Host clubs include Bowood, Bude & North Cornwall, China Fleet, Falmouth, Hayle Golf, Helston Golf Short Course, Helston Sports Centre, Killiow, Lakeview, Launceston, Looe, Mullion, Perranporth, St Austell, St Kew, St Mellion, Tehidy Park, Trethorne, Trevose and West Cornwall.

Exeter-based Townsend is hoping for a bumper Devon Golf Week.

The former Exeter rugby player – whose first love has always been golf - said: “Last year we had something like 700 people coming along to all the week’s events in Devon.

“This year there has already been a lot more interest so I am hoping to get over 1,000 people playing golf for the first time during Devon Golf Week.”

Host clubs for Devon Golf Week include Bigbury, Boringdon Park, Churston, Dainton Park, Exeter, Exminster, Fingle Glen, Great Torrington, Hele Park, Honiton, Holsworthy, Libbaton, Portmore, Royal North Devon, Sidmouth, Staddon Heights, Stover, Sweetham Hills, Teignmouth, Teign Valley, Thurlestone, Warren, Woodbury Park and Yelverton.

Events are also planned for Plymouth and golf centres and driving ranges around the county.
