The 2012 English Boys Under 16 Open Amateur Stroke Play Championship for the McGregor Trophy has teed off at Trevose Golf & Country Club.
Northumberland’s Jack Hermeston, the young City of Newcastle ace won the 72 holes championship by four shots a year ago, finishing seven under on 281 at South Moor, in Durham.
The last player to successfully defend the title was Cumbrian Seb Crookall-Nixon. The Workington golfer won in Wiltshire, at High Post, in 2008 and at Radcliffe-on-Trent a year later.
Hermeston faces a tough north Cornwall coast challenge from an impressive field packed with boy internationals, including many from overseas.
Last year’s runner-up Bradley Neil, from Scotland, and Norway’s Jarand Ekeland Arnøy, who tied third at South Moor, are among those vying for the prized Trophy at Trevose over the next three days.
Blairgowrie’s Neil finished three under on 285 last summer while Arnøy saved his best until last, firing a best of the championship final round 65 for a 287 total.
Kenwick Park’s Lincolnshire boys champion Ashton Turner, a member of the team that won the Boys County Championship last year, is another likely front-runner along with Derbyshire’s England under 14 champion Bradley Moore, from Kedleston Park also in the 132-strong field.
Harry Hall (West Cornwall) and Niall Hutton (St Mellion) represent Cornwall's interest in the national competition.
England - including boy international Hermeston - will field two teams of three in the Nations Cup competition over the opening two rounds.
Other countries competing in the Nations Cup are Denmark, Ireland, Italy, Norway, Scotland and Spain.
Play is due to start at 0730 daily – weather permitting - and admission is free.
• Unfortunately fog and mist caused a 90-minute delay to start of play today, play underway at 0900
