SOUTH WEST GOLF All amateur eyes on Minchinhampton

SWCGA golfToday Minchinhampton Golf Club, near Stroud, stages the 36 holes South West Counties individual and team strokeplay championships over 36 holes, weather-permitting.

The Gloucestershire golf club is stage for this week's annual South West men's amateur golf championships and as such, and as is traditional on a Tuesday, also stages today's individual competition and the team event, which acts as the English County Finals regional qualifier.


The club will be a hive of activity as the best amateur men's golfers from the West compete both individually and for their county.

Competing during "South West Week" are the hosts Gloucestershire as well as Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, Somerset and Wiltshire. 

All six counties had a practice round over the Cotswolds course on Saturday and over the past two days have been competing in the week-long matchplay competition.

On Monday the host county got off to a flyer with an 8¾-5¼ win over border rivals Wiltshire while Cornwall edged past Dorset 7¾-6¼ and Somerset eased to the opening day's biggest win, 9¼-4¾.

Devon bounced back to surprise cross-Tamar rivals Cornwall 8¼-5¾ yesterday while Somerset continued their winning start by upsetting Gloucestershire 8½-5½ to top the leaderboard after two days and rounds.

Wiltshire claimed their first win, 8-6, against Dorset after building up a 5-3 lead in the morning singles.

Tomorow the matchplay competition resumes with Devon versus Wiltshire (0800) Gloucestershire vs Dorset (0900) and Cornwall versus Somerset from 10.

Today however all eyes are on the prize!
