MULLEN'S AUSTRALIAN PROGRESSION

Royal North Devon teenage ace Jimmy Mullen breezed through to the 2012 Australian Amateur Championship matchplay stage in Melbourne.

Mullen carded a level par 72 at Huntingdale Golf Club after opening with a one-over 73 at Woodlands GC to secure a top 10 spot as highest placed English golfer in a star-studded international strokeplay field.

The 2011 South West Counties Boys champion from Bideford was tied 10th with three other golfers following the 36 hole qualifier.

Mullen, 18, lost to New Zealand’s Jonny Ratcliffe at the 20th in the first match play round at Woodlands.

Mullen – who finished runner-up in last month’s Abu Dhabi Junior Golf Championship – is enjoying his working winter in Australia, saying: “The weather is great, I have got a nice bit of work with great people and I get to play golf.”
