Gloucestershire county champion Shelby Smart continued early season form by sharing the 2012 English Women’s Close Amateur Championship first day lead at Royal Birkdale.
Smart (Knowle) scored three over 78 at Royal Birkdale along with Melissa Nicol (Moor Hall) and Helen Searle (Huddersfield).
Bristol teenager Smart, 17, claimed her third county ladies title in four years earlier this month.
2011 Devon champion Jessica Bradley was joint fifth on 80 two shots ahead of Cornwall’s Katie Rule (St Enodoc) and Jemima Gregson (Knowle).
Cornwall champion Sarah-Jane Boyd (Truro) scored 83 and was 18th following the first of four rounds.

• Saunton’s Emma Tayler is the new Devon Ladies champion, beating Torquay’s Molly Haslam in the final over her home course.
• Sophie Keech (Lyme Regis) retained her Dorset Ladies county title when she beat Kyra Horlock (Broadstone) by two holes at Came Down last week.
Keech, 16, is coached at Millfield School by Karen Nicholls and will be an integral part of the Dorset team for next month’s South West Counties team championship at Trevose (June 11-15).
• Cornwall boys under 18s beat Cornwall Ladies 5 ½-4 ½ in a friendly match at Trevose on Sunday.
