GOLF Sunshine start to 2012 Race to Woodbury Park

The showcase 2012 PGA West Region Race To Woodbury Park teed off in glorious Devonshire sunshine today at 0800.

The region’s top 60 professionals have gathered at Woodbury Park Golf & Country Club for the seventh and final order of merit tournament of the season.

Welsh golfer Matthew Dearden (Vale Hotel Golf & Spa Resort) tops the order of merit heading into the two-day 36 hole event following his top of the leaderboard finish at last month’s Marstons PGA West Region Championship at Saunton.

Pontypridd-based Dearden, 33, finished on 139 after two rounds at Saunton collecting 270 order of merit points to add to his impressive second spot at the previous order of merit event, the Forest Classic, and his late May success at the Bournemouth 4Ball Festival.

Dearden – who won the 2011 Race To Woodbury Park tournament - has played in all six order of merit events this summer, accruing 1,190 points along the way.

Second in the order of merit is Lee Thompson (Dudbsury) on 1076.9 points.

Consistent Devon professional Paul Hendriksen, the golf manager at Dinnaton, near Ivybridge, is third with 975 points after finishing runner-up in three of the six order of merit events so far this year.

Last summer Brixham-born Hendriksen was a top three finisher behind 2011 order of merit winner Chris Gill (Exeter) and runner-up Michael Watson (Wessex Golf Centre).

Watson lies fourth on 953.50 points today before the two-day tournament tees off at Woodbury.
