SW GOLF Sloman new champion, Gloucestershire qualify

england golf logoTaunton & Pickeridge amateur ace Tom Sloman is the new South West England Golf champion.

Somerset’s Sloman scored brilliant back to back 65s to finish 12 under par and pip Bristol’s Mitch Waite to the individual strokeplay title at Cumberwell Park Golf Club, Bradford-on-Avon.

Waite’s great 11 under 131 played a major part in securing Gloucestershire’s place in the men's 2018 English County Finals.

Gloucestershire finished six strokes clear of South West Week hosts Wiltshire and 15 under par overall to secure a place in the four-team England Golf national finals at Aldeburgh Golf Club from September 28-30.

Sloman's individual win shows should inspire others. Last summer at Weston-super-Mare he finished 10th overall three under on 137 although he did fire a scorching 66 opening round, an early warning blast of what was to come in this year's championship.

In a top regional field of 72 golfers 26 finished under par over 36 holes.
