Rob Mugridge scored the greens opening goal four minutes into the second half and although Surbiton – who started the day fifth – replied through Ben Tibble in the 48th minute, the students picked up their first valuable point in four Men’s Premier Division matches.

Great Britain ace Ashley Jackson scored two late goals for defending champions East Grinstead as they recorded a 3-2 home win over challengers Beeston to open up a three-point lead at the top of the top flight.

Last season East Grinstead finished 11 points clear of runners-up Beeston in the final table.

Saturday’s match at the water-based University Sports Park starts at 5.00pm with the anticipation of a large crowd, boosted by the fixture’s promotion as the students’ varsity hockey game.
