Haley – who is set to be one of the Springboks stars at next summer’s Olympic Games in London – gave the students a flying start by opening the scoring at Southgate in the second minute.

Drew Burkin restored parity seven minutes later but the University forged further ahead when Rob Mugridge converted a 29th minute penalty corner to ensure Exeter started the second half 2-1 ahead.

Haley, who has scored 50 goals for South Africa and was a regular scorer in their Olympic qualification tournament last month, notched his second goal of the game for the greens in the 43rd minute.

Last term’s top scorer Tom Carson enabled Exeter to forge further ahead in the 54th minute after converting his second penalty corner goal in two games.

Southgate’s second goal, from a 67th minute penalty corner, finished by Kevin Haigh, came too late for the struggling home side.

Exeter’s win lifts them to sixth in the table on six points after four games and ahead of their third successive EHL road trip, Sunday’s sojourn to eighth placed Beeston.
