HOCKEY National League season starts on Saturday

Clifton Ladies – captained by Fleur Horner - visit Slough in their opening Investec Women’s Premier Division match at 1200.

Slough are set to include former Isca University ace Amy Sheehan in their forward line while Clifton start life without Great Britain bronze medal winning Olympian George Twigg, who has joined premier rivals Surbiton.

Newly promoted Taunton Vale – last term’s West Clubs Women’s Hockey League champions - begin their 18-match Women’s Conference West programme at home to promotion contenders Swansea City (Taunton Vale Sports Club 1330).

Bristol’s Firebrands host last season’s champions Buckingham (Clifton College 1130) while Isca University – now captained by top scorer Claire Thomas - meet Southampton’s Trojans at the University of Exeter (1200).

Gloucester City start on the road, away to Staines (1330) while Stourport are at home to Barnes Hounslow Ealing (1200).

An intriguing Men’s Conference West campaign also starts on Saturday with new-look University of Exeter, newly relegated from the Premier Division, hosting University of Birmingham (1400).

Newly promoted Firebrands – last season’s Davis Wood Hockey League champions – face a tough opening test at Cardiff & UWIC, the 2011 regional league champions, skippered by Jimmy Devney (WIS, Sophia Gardens 1430).

Last season’s divisional champions Team Bath Buccaneers visit Cheltenham (Balcarras 1230) while Cardiff club Whitchurch visit Fareham (1330). Guildford host Havant at noon.
