MHL WEST ROUND 15 Isca bid for great escape

NOW: Pensions Men's Hockey League logoIsca host Cheltenham at the University of Exeter Sports Park today (1230) seeking a third successive NOW: Pensions England Hockey League win in a row.

Simon Tremlett's resurgent Exeter side maintained their great escape bid with a surprise 4-1 win at seventh placed Havant to move within four points of the four teams above them in Men’s Conference West, including eighth placed Cheltenham.

Man of the match Jamie Cook set Isca on the road to victory on the south coast with his 15th minute opener.

Oliver Nail hammered home for Havant in the 24th minute but Isca ran away with the game in the final nine minutes after Sam Lynch made it 2-1. Rick McCollum made it 3-1 three minutes later before Tom Whitworth wrapped up the basement side’s second win in a row with his ninth goal of the term.

Cheltenham remain in the relegation zone following a 1-0 home defeat by second from bottom Guildford.

Fourth placed University of Exeter visit second placed Indian Gymkhana (2.00) boosted by a comfortable 4-1 home win over seventh placed Fareham.

All four Exeter goals came from open play before Robert Wilson’s 67th minute consolation strike for the visitors.

Nick Rees got the ball rolling after six minutes before Ed Carson made it 2-0 in the 29th. Nick Cooper took his season’s league tally to 18 in the 41st minute before Edwards Matts made it 4-0 on 65. 

Incredibly 15 of Cooper’s 18 goals have come from open play.

Indian Gym slipped off the summit following a surprise 7-0 top-of-the-table defeat at new leaders Cardiff & Met, who visit Guildford at noon today.

Defending champions Cardiff boasted six different scorers – Owain Dolan Gray, Luke Hawker, Rupert Shipperley, Mark Whatling, Ben Croxall and two goal Swedish international Henry Eriksson.
