TeamBath Buccaneers celebrated receiving the EHL Men’s Conference West championship trophy with a 4-2 victory over second placed Whitchurch at the University of Bath Sports Training Village.
Buccs players were presented with the trophy and their medals by match official Peter Wood before the penultimate league game of the regular season.
A determined Whitchurch side tried to spoil Buccs’ celebrations on Saturday and led 1-0 at half time. Richard Bendry levelled in the 38th minute, converting an inch perfect cross from the left by Tim Davenport.
Buccs were only level for four minutes before Joe Naughalty restored Whitchurch’s lead. The visitors’ keeper made some terrific saves from Davenport and Johnny Kinder as Buccs pressed to restore parity and then top scorer Davenport cannoned a shot off the post.
Davenport’s next effort from a short corner made it 2-2 in the 59th minute to take his league tally to 27 goals. Davenport is the division's leading scorer.
Jonathan Haynes teed up Eugene Malthouse to put Buccs ahead for the first time on the hour and Bendry completed the scoring five minutes from time following a one-two with Phil Ball.
Buccs are 20 points clear at the top of table ahead of Sunday’s match at University of Birmingham-based Bournville.
