Devon face an RFU Under 20 Championship quarter final trip to the cathedral city of Canterbury after toppling hardy Dorset & Wiltshire 24-15 at Topsham RFC.
In a compelling pool 3 match under the Devon sun, the home side sealed victory thanks to tries from Pearce Hancock (2) George Wilson and George deMendonca.
Centre Jack Mason’s 18th minute try, converted by fly half Tom Weaver, put Dorset & Wilts ahead. Second row forward Hancock’s first try made it 7-5 before Weaver’s penalty made it 10-5.
Just before half time second rower Wilson levelled the scores and fly half Matt Grieveson added the extras to make it 12-10.
George deMendonca winged in to make it 17-10 halfway through the second half before Will Hoddinott narrowed the gap to 17-15 by finding a rare gap in the Devon defence.
There was still time for more rugby fireworks at the Bonfire Field, and the try of the match.
Devon - coached by Plymouth Albion captain Ruairi Cushion and managed by Gareth Jones - secured victory when impressive right wing replacement Chris Jose sped to keep the ball in play as he caught it on the run above the touchline, fed inside to Hancock who swept in under the posts to give Charlie Attis the easiest of conversions.
Devon now play unbeaten pool four winners Kent at Canterbury RFC on Sunday March 30 (1430).
