Exeter Chiefs head coach Rob Baxter praised his squad following a thrilling 15-8 LV= Cup final win over Aviva Premiership pacesetters Northampton Saints at Sandy Park.
Exeter's first major silverware in their 143-year history was clinched in front of 10,004 at Sandy Park thanks to tries from Chris Whitehead and cup-winning skipper Dean Mumm, who scored the match-winning touchdown. Devon-born fly half Henry Slade added the extras.
Baxter was captain of the club when they won their last trophy – the Devon Senior Cup – 18 years ago.
He said: “What really pleases me is the players getting a tangible reward for all the hard work that they have put in. I say that because they have worked extremely hard this season and it hasn’t always felt like we had a reward for all the hard work that we have put in.
“We have had some tough results against some very good sides in both the Heineken Cup and the Premiership and we’ve had some late losses and had one or two things not quite go our way. But then what happens? The last two weeks we’ve come through two very tight games and now we are LV= Cup winners, which is fantastic.”
