THIS SPORTING LIFE a stroll in the park ...

It's 1240 and I have got to start preparing to go and cover a match.

I would love to be in about a hundred places, with family and friends: playing or watching hockey, rugby or football.

When I type-in the fixtures for the weekend, motivated by amazing teams that follow SWSN on twitter, I think "wish I could be there" and not long after "or there, or there".

Obviously you have to be a bit of a sports nut to run a seven-days-a-week website/twitter feed on the subject but I only think I am like all the hard-working people involved in staging fixtures - many on a voluntary basis - so others can benefit.

This week I read how the chairman, groundsman and a pack of volunteers pitched in to ensure Cross Keys RFC could stage their British & Irish Cup tie against Newcastle Falcons at Pandy Park.

The result matters not but the dedication of those who helped out in the South Wales Valleys and their passion for rugby spurs me on.

I am still a huge sports fan and will be happy walking to this afternoon's match, through a sun-flooded park with other supporters.

It's a familiar route I've taken since I walked by father's side to the Mennaye Field to watch the Pirates play in the early 1960s.

It's what sporting Saturdays are all about...

• today's SW football fixtures
