Plymouth made a promising start, winning the first two races, before losing 62-30 in their Premier League Speedway match at Redcar on last night.
Ben Barker won the opening heat and Kyle Hughes followed up by taking first place in the next race, but Redcar came back strongly with six maximum 5-1 heat wins in the next seven heats.
Following their early promise, the Devils managed only one race win in the remaining 13 heats with new signing Ricky Wells taking the chequered flag in heat six.
Even top scorer Barker had to settle for two second places and two third places in his remaining four outings.
One of those second places came on a tactical ride in heat 11 which saw Barker collect double points to earn Plymouth a 5-3 win for their only heat advantage of the evening.
The Devils will be out for revenge in the return match at the St Boniface Arena tonight (1930).
