DIAMONDS SHINE IN SOUTH WEST DERBY

premier squash league logo Exeter Diamonds will top Premier Squash League group B over Christmas and heading into the New Year.

Diamonds stormed to the PSL summit following a 5-0 home win over south west rivals UWE Bristol at Devon & Exeter Squash & Racketball Club.

The round four clash was a first-class regional derby topped by Dutchman Laurens Jan Anjema - ranked 12 in the world - upsetting Bristol number one Mohamed El Shorbagy, the world No8 from Egypt.

Anjema won the Exeter midnight marathon 10-12, 15-13, 12-10, 7-11, 11-9.

Wins for Aisling Blake, James Snell and Tim Vail guaranteed victory for the Devon club before all eyes focussed on the home side's Australian star Stewart Boswell.

The 33-year-old former world No4 announced his retirement from the PSA Tour last month, signalling the conclusion of his distinguished four-season term with the Exeter.

Boswell delighted his supporters by despatching Lucas Serme 11-9, 11-5, 11-2 for his 18th victory in 23 PSL appearances for Exeter, a sparkling record by any sporting standards.

Exeter start 2012 with a round five test of their title credentials at defending champions Surrey Health on Tuesday January 10.

Second placed Surrey will be anxious to get back on track after being toppled from top spot following their 3-2 defeat at third placed St George’s Hill.

Bristol resume their PSL campaign at home to fourth placed Chichester and seeking to start the New Year with their first win of the season.

Exeter Diamonds are sponsored by Michael Spiers Exclusive Jewellery.
