Six medals were won by University of Bath swimmers – one gold and five silver – on a super Saturday night in the pool on day two of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Ben Proud of the University’s swimming club reclaimed the 50m butterfly title he had won at Glasgow 2014 and sporting scholar Tom Dean took silver in his latest epic 200m freestyle battle with Scotland’s Duncan Scott.

University of Bath sporting scholar Kate Shortman says she and artistic swimming partner Izzy Thorpe are targeting an Olympic podium place after winning Women’s Duet bronze at the Kraków-Małopolska 2023 European Games in Poland.

It is a first continental medal for 30 years by a British pairing in the duet and the first major international medal of their careers to date for the duo, who improved on their preliminaries score by more than 15 points in Saturday’s final after receiving no base marks on their degree of difficulty of 34.500.

Seven more University of Bath-based swimmers, including Olympic gold-medallists James Guy and Freya Anderson, have been added to the Team England squad for the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Holly Hibbott, Ed Mildred, Jacob Peters, Luke Turley and Brodie Williams are also among the 38 swimmers confirmed today as joining the previously-selected Tom Dean and Ben Proud in the home team for this summer’s Games.

Swimmers from the University of Bath finished the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games with an incredible 27 medals between them after securing more gold, silver and bronze on an electric last evening of racing in Sandwell Aquatics Centre.

Sporting scholar Tom Dean became Team England’s most decorated swimmer at a single Games as he won his sixth silver in the 200m individual medley before anchoring a quartet also featuring British Swimming Performance Centre Bath team-mates Brodie Williams and James Guy to a sensational gold in the men’s 4x100m medley relay.

James Guy won his second gold medal of Tokyo 2020 and University of Bath graduate Anna Hopkin was also crowned as Olympic champion as Team GB’s gold rush in the swimming pool continued in magnificent style this morning.

Victory came in world-record time too as, after being given a strong start to the mixed 4x100m medley relay final by Kathleen Dawson and Adam Peaty, British Swimming National Centre Bath star Guy swam a stunning butterfly split of 50.0 to give freestyler Hopkin a lead that she consolidated magnificently with a 52.0 leg to bring the team home in an incredible time of 3:37.58.
