WATER POLO Bristol and Cheltenham top national pools

Bristol Central and Cheltenham are through to the men's British Gas Water Polo Championships Finals after topping their preliminary pools with three straight wins.

And the semi-final draw keeps the South West sides apart when they compete in the Manchester finals in two weeks.

Led by Team GB Olympic men's water polo captain Craig Figes, freescoring Bristol topped group B with wins over Welsh Wanderers 22-5, London Penguins 18-11 and Lancaster 12-9.

Runners-up Lancaster will play Cheltenham in the semis following wins over London Penguins (19-13) and Cardiff's Welsh Wanderers (17-5). Wanderers beat Penguins 13-9 in the final preliminary game.

Super Fives champions Cheltenham beat Caledonia 20-9, Manchester 13-10 and then defending champions Portobello 17-12 to top the A team table.

Hosts Manchester progressed thanks to wins over Portobello (11-9) and Caledonia (18-2).

The British Gas Water Polo Championships finals take place in Manchester over the February 23-24 weekend.

• Defending national champions City of Manchester, Otter, Liverpool Lizards and Coventry contest the women's finals after finishing in the British Water Polo League Super Fives top four last month.
