LEAGUE 2 Plymouth Argyle FC 6 Newport County AFC 1

Plymouth Argyle Football Club crestPlymouth Argyle swept to automatic promotion on the back of an emphatic home League Two victory over relegation haunted Newport County at Home Park.

It is Argyle’s first promotion in 13 years and signals the end of a six-year absence from League One.

On-loan Cardiff City winger Matty Kennedy put Argyle ahead with a looping 40th minute header in at the far post.

Jake Jervis waltzed in Argyle’s second two minutes later as Derek Adams’ side got into their stride.

Playmaker Graham Carey increased the greens’ lead 10 minutes later, beating County keeper Joe Day at his near post from close range after a string of step-overs.

Target man Ryan Taylor made it 4-0 with an audacious back heel in the 58th minute and three minutes later Kennedy curled in his second and Plymouth’s fifth from just inside the box.

Jervis finished off a length of the field move with his second goal, rifling home on 73 minutes and still Argyle poured forward seeking goals.

Luke McCormick made three point-blank second half saves to somehow keep County at bay until beaten by substitute Aaron Williams' stoppage time lob.

Attendance 13971 (337 away)
