SWPL EAST Torpoint Athletic 2 Dartmouth AFC 3

SWPL logoDartmouth twice came from behind to claim all three points in a hugely entertaining, high tempo, Peninsula Premier clash at The Mill.

The Darts were 1-0 and 2-1 down but showed great resilience and belief to clinch victory against a strong Torpoint side.

The visitors’ strength at set pieces proved the difference between the sides. Trailing 2-1 soon after the start of the second half, they scored two goals in three minutes from corners to turn the game on its head.

Dartmouth came under intense pressure in the late stages from a Torpoint side including Plymouth Parkway striker Ryan Richards, on as a substitute, but defended brilliantly.

Torpoint made a great start, sweeping into a second minute lead when a long ball undid Dartmouth’s offside trap and Curtis Damerell lifted the ball pat onrushing Darts keeper Simon Bleazard.

It was almost 2-0 in the fourth minute when Sam Hill’s excellent pass played in Charlie Hardcastle along the right but his fierce shot was tipped around the post by Bleazard.

Torpoint were punished for giving away possession in midfield after eight minutes as Cole Harford took advantage with a low shot from 20 yards which gave Torpoint keeper Jason Peters no chance.

The home side were still a threat on the break but as the first half progressed Dartmouth looked the more likely to score again. George Dandridge saw two shots go inches wide, while Harford’s 43rd minute header was deflected just over.

Torpoint’s best move of the first half ended with Damerell crossing from the left towards Hardcastle at the far post, but Darts left back Morgan Harford got back to clear for a corner.

There was barely time to settle for the second half before Torpoint re-established a lead, with the evergreen Lewis Young producing a great strike from the edge of the penalty area which flew past Bleazard.

Almost immediately, Young was taken off to allow Richards some action and his first pass, a stunning first time 30-yard volley to find Hill out on the right, suggested the home side would go on to extend their advantage.

Dartmouth had different ideas.

They levelled in the 54th minute - when a corner from the right was touched in at the near post by Bradley Frost - and swept ahead two minutes later.

Another corner, this time from the left, found Liam Northcott unmarked six yards out and he powered his header home to make it 3-2.

Torpoint bombarded the Darts penalty area in the last 20 minutes and will consider themselves unlucky not to have salvaged a point.

Dartmouth produced the clearest opportunity in the late stages, again from a corner, as Danny Rushe’s superb header was tipped onto the bar and over by Peters.
