SWPL WEST Saltash United 4 Camelford AFC 2

SWPL logoSuper sub Ben Holter scored Saltash’s fourth goal in stoppage time to break the hearts of leaders Camelford at Kimberley Stadium.

The young striker had been on the field for only two minutes when he produced a quality finish only 20 seconds after the Camels had poured forward for a corner in search of an equaliser.

The result extended Saltash’s unbeaten start to the league season to five games, while ending the record of Camelford, who went into the games with five wins and a draw from six games.

It was a cracker of a match from first minute to last, providing the crowd of 140 with rich entertainment.

The Ashes, without seven members of their squad because of injuries and unavailability, had enough know-how to come out of the game with maximum points.

But Reg Hambly’s Camels, who stayed top on goal difference after this result, contributed hugely to the occasion. The margin of defeat was harsh on them.

Reece Thomson gave the home side an eighth minute lead before Camelford almost levelled within two minutes. Ed Harrison played a one-two with Connor Rhodes on the edge of the box before firing a low shot towards the net but Saltash stopper Ryan Rickard kept the ball out with his outstretched right leg.

Camels keeper Josh Colwill then made an excellent double save to prevent Thomson and then Jason Vincent doubling the home side’s lead in the 25th minute.

It was 2-0 in the 35th minute with a collector’s item - a Sam Farrant header!

Callum Martindale produced a superb cross from the left wing and Farrant was in the middle to crash a header home.

Bobby Hopkinson came close on the stroke of half-time with a curling 20-yarder which left Rickard rooted to the spot, but the effort went inches wide.

He was back for more, though, seven minutes into the second half with a volley from 15 yards which gave the visitors a lifeline.

The Ashes took only eight minutes to restore their two-goal advantage when Josh McCabe headed into his own net from a corner in his attempt to clear inside the six yard box.

In a rip-roaring second half, Camelford made it 3-2 with 20 minutes to go as Ed Harrison rose wonderfully at the near post to send a glancing header in at the far post from Hopkinson’s pinpoint free kick out on the right.

The Camels pushed for an equaliser and Rhodes came close with a rasping drive across the face of goal which flew inches wide in the 76th minute.

But perhaps the innocence which produced such a confident display caught up with the Camels as the game moved into the second minute of stoppage time.

They threw virtually everybody up for a corner in a last desperate bid for an equaliser but when the ball was cleared, the Ashes were away and Holter swept the ball past Colwill to seal victory.
