PENINSULA PREM Liskeard Athletic 4 Newquay AFC 2

SWPL logoYou can't keep James Lorenz out of the headlines. He just keeps scoring goals.

The striker helped himself to his fourth hat-trick in eight games to take his tally to 17 goals as Liskeard moved up to second in the South West Peninsula Premier West table.

The Blues are a point behind surprise early leaders Camelford with a game in hand after the Camels also won, seeing off Launceston 3-2 at Trefrew Park.

Callum Brown set Liskeard on their way at Lux Park with a ninth minute goal after good build-up work along the left by Lorenz and Tom Savigar.

Lorenz opened his account with a tap-in after a mix-up in the Newquay defence allowed Jarrad Woods to put Savigar through.

On 37 minutes it was 2-0 as Savigar’s fierce right foot shot from 18 yards deflected off Lorenz’s backside into the far corner of the net.

Newquay keeper Nathan Prentice produced a spectacular save to deny Woods deep into first half stoppage time but the Blues extended their lead four minutes into the second half when Macauley Thorp’s pass played in Lorenz to score.

The excellent Savigar had an effort kicked off the line three minutes later as Liskeard looked in unstoppable form but with the game all but won, they withdrew Lorenz, Savigar and Ben Collins and lost some of their impetus.

Newquay, ravaged by injuries and unavailabilities, showed great character in continuing to give everything and they were rewarded in the 76th minute when Louis Price pulled a goal back.

Three minutes from time the visitors scrambled in a second goal and almost got a third in the last minute when Price’s free kick smashed against the bar.
