KJM SPORT REPORT Saltash Utd 1 Millbrook AFC 1

Western LeaguelogoSaltash United will look for an immediate boost to morale on Monday when they travel to Ilfracombe Town (1300ko).

The Ashes were left feeling robbed on Boxing Day when rivals Millbrook scored deep into injury time to leave Kimberley Stadium with a 1-1 draw.

Saltash’s new signing from Bideford, Rubin Wilson, had given the home side the lead on the hour.

And the Ashes, who had been the dominant side, were seconds away from collecting all three Western Premier points when Millbrook launched one last attack.

Tom Payne sent a free kick into the six yard box and midfield man Josh Toulson was there to poke in the equaliser.

The goal stretched Millbrook’s unbeaten run to 10 matches going into Monday’s home game against Wellington (1500ko).

Millbrook manager Macca Brown said: “It was a draw that felt like a victory, given the nature of the equaliser with practically the last kick of the game, so we were obviously delighted at the end.

“You never know what you are going to get performance wise on Boxing Day, we certainly lacked a touch of quality – other than Chris Wearing in goal – but we made up for that with the desire and character not to be beaten and it’s not a surprise any more to see the lads fight back like that.

“When it happens time and again you can recognise it as a real quality and that’s where we are now.

“We went for it in the later stages, switching to just two defenders and an extra man up front to make a 2-5-3 shape, and then Chris went up for the final set piece and that always causes havoc as long as the delivery is good and we can rely on Tom for that.”
