The only consolation for Dean Cardew’s side after the opening day is that they won’t have to play teams of the calibre of Mousehole every week.
Manager Jake Ash has kept summer comings and goings to a minimum after his team finished third last season, and anybody who finishes above them this season will have done very well.
Cardew said: “No complaints about the result. We were beaten by a far better side.
“We started the game well but they soon got on top of us and controlled it.”
On an incredibly dry and fast playing surface, Torpoint went 1-0 ahead thanks to a 13th minute Ryan Richards penalty and would have doubled their lead if Richards had converted a second penalty on the half-hour, which Ollie Chenoweth kept out.
But Mousehole had been the better side and Louis Price’s 37th minute equaliser from a corner was the least the visitors deserved to take into the break.
Whatever was said at half-time, Mousehole came out firing on all cylinders and two goals in three minutes underlined their dominance of possession.
Paulo Sousa’s excellent through ball from the halfway line in the 47th minute sent Hayden Turner clear, and he ran forward before firing a low right foot shot wide of Jason Peters into the net.
Three minutes later it was 3-1 as man of the match Tallan Mitchell took advantage of defenders backing off as he unleashed an unstoppable shot from 20 yards which flew past a static Peters into the net.
When Price scored his second goal and Mousehole’s fourth just after the hour, there were visible signs of heads dropping among the Torpoint ranks but the experienced Richards shouted about ‘body language’ and the home side lifted themselves.
Paul Heveran had a shot tipped over the bar and Callum Holder headed inches wide at the far post from a corner but there was to be no denying Mousehole as Mitchell forced home a fifth goal in the 78th minute.
It would be easy to suggest the margin of defeat was harsh on Torpoint, but that was not the case. Mousehole are full of quality and could have had a few more goals.
