When Dan Jennings fired home a sixth minute goal from a breakaway, the Blues looked on course for a cup upset and Jennings should have made it 2-0 four minutes before the end of a 45 minutes the home side dominated.
That proved to be a big moment because Shepton were a completely different proposition in the second half, taking only 11 minutes to turn the extra preliminary round tie on its head.
Substitute Aaron Seviour, who had replaced the injured Ieuan Crowe after only 12 minutes, unleashed a wonder strike from 25 yards to equalise after 53 minutes and three minutes later striker Joe Morgan’s near post flick went in off the post.
Liskeard were shell-shocked and when Fin Haines made it 3-1 with a fierce low drive from the right hand edge of the penalty after in the 69th minute, it was virtually game over.
The Blues’ response was to bring on striker Tom Cleveland for midfield man Harry Jeffrey and switch to 4-2-4, needing to go for it to have any chance of getting back into the tie.
But there was little time for them to test their new system before Seviour was in the right place at the right time to finish off from close range and kill any remaining hope Liskeard might have had.
Shepton Mallet are a good team but the way the Blues capitulated in the second half will be an early season concern for managers Lee Mann and Martin Hodge.
It’s all very well having prolific scorers James Lorenz and Jennings in attack – they caused plenty of problems for the Shepton defence in the first half – but if you’re leaking goals at the other end, you’re making life very difficult for yourselves.
Liskeard are rightly among the favourites to win the South West Peninsula League premier west division this season but after conceding six goals in their opening two home games, they will have to improve at the back.
