KJM SPORT REPORT Cadbury Heath 1 Millbrook 5

FOUR days after failing to find a goal in their last home eague game of the season against Street, Millbrook ended their campaign by hitting five at bottom club Cadbury Heath on Saturday.

Macca Brown’s men will finish mid-table 13th in the Premier Division - barring two big wins for Wellington in their last two games - and that’s some achievement given the club’s meagre playing budget.

Millbrook have shown in their first two seasons at Western League level that they can compete on the field, which is a testament to Brown, his coaching team and the players.

Of Saturday’s five star show, Brown said: “It was a great day at the office and nice to sign off the season in style.

“Cadbury Heath is a difficult place to go, in the two years we’ve been in the Western League you often see teams come up here and drop points, including the teams at the top.

“They’ve had a difficult run since Christmas, but we weren’t going to read anything into that as so many of their results are close, and I said before the game to the players it didn’t have to be pure or pretty, it is just one of those fixtures where you turn up and simply have a job to do, and we did it.

“It was of course the perfect start, Josh Toulson battled with their centre backs and played Jack Wood through to finish after just 20 seconds!

“Cadbury Heath equalised with an emphatic finish but I always felt confident that we were doing the right things and causing them problems throughout that first half.

“Noah was starting to make us tick in the middle, his development since the new year has been amazing, he’s learning so quickly and I think we deservedly went in at half time ahead when Kieran O’Melia did well to set up JT.

“The second half started quite scrappy, and fair play to Cadbury Heath because they definitely came out and asked us a few questions, but I felt that they would run out of steam before us and that’s what happened really.

“Tylor Love-Holmes and Kieran both helped themselves to tap-ins before Woody wrapped it up with his second, following up from a long shot from Ed Goodman.

“I was delighted for Jack; since changing our shape and the balance of our midfield, he’s probably been our best player in the last six weeks or so.

“He’s been getting two or three really good chances a game and his understanding of the game is putting himself in those positions, he probably should have won us a few games recently with those chances but has just lacked the finishing touch but he showed that yesterday and I was really happy for him.”

So what is Brown’s verdict on the campaign?

He said: “It wraps up an eventful season. We started with so much hope last June, things seemed to be really positive and we were optimistic.

“Bur in typical Millbrook fashion things unraveled a bit and it wasn’t so straightforward but the players have been fantastic throughout.

“There were frustrations after we lost 1-0 on Tuesday for the ninth time this season and I said it has summed up our season, but there’s positives in that as well.

“It’s been a season of really fine margins, every single one of those 1-0 deficits could have gone the other way and those are the fine lines at this level.”
