LEAGUE ONE Plymouth Argyle 2 Bristol Rovers 0

Table toppers Plymouth claimed their 19th League One home win, 2-0 over West rivals Bristol Rovers, to stay on course for automatic promotion.

Striker Niall Ennis broke the deadlock with a brilliantly executed bicycle kick on 51 minutes.

With his back to goal, Ennis took James Wilson’s pass down on his chest before superbly beating keeper James Belshaw with a perfectly executed overhead kick.

Argyle extended their lead five minutes later after Joe Edwards goal-bound volley was hooked for a corner.

Matt Butcher’s flag kick was headed home by central defender Macaulay Gillesphey.

Rovers did well to hold Argyle to 0-0 at half time after being reduced to 10 men in the 26th minute, as Antony Evans was yellow carded for a second time following fouls on Bali Mumba then Danny Mayor.

Edwards sent a diving header just wide in the 40th from Adam Randell’s cross into the box.

Callum Wright headed wide from a free kick on 14th minute.

Rovers best chance came in the second spell as James Gibbons fired just wide, Argyle responded by countering and forcing a superb save from Belshaw.

Argyle need two points from their final league games - home to Burton Albion on Saturday, away to Port Vale on the final day - to secure a top two spot and promotion to the Championship.

15th placed Rovers visit Peterborough on Saturday then Shrewsbury on Tuesday May 2 before finishing the season at home to Bolton Wanderers on Sunday May 7 (1200ko).
