WESTWARD HO! Mullen is home course favourite

England golf international Jimmy Mullen will be among the favourites to win this weekend’s 72 hole West of England Open Amateur Stroke Play Championship over his home course at Royal North Devon Golf Club.

The three-day annual event alternates between Saunton and RND and historically attracts a top class amateur field to North Devon.

The competition will have added importance this weekend as Royal North Devon - England’s oldest golf course, founded in 1864 - celebrates its 150th year.

Mullen – who tees off at 0950 today – has recent success over 72 holes having won the Duncan Putter at Southerndown Golf Club by three shots with a two over par score of 282 in Wales two weeks ago.

RND secretary Mark Evans a top former county amateur player for Devon said: “We had 157 entries for the West of England this year and balloted out at 0.8 so there should be some very good golf being played out there this weekend.”

Adding more local spice are the likes of RND's new Devon first team debutants Chris Brown and Ollie Tanton, Saunton's Ben Isaac from across Bideford Bay and Cornish ace Tom Fox from across the River Tamar at Saltash's China Fleet Club

Rest assured – whatever the weather at Bideford Bay – competition will be fierce over the world famous links at Westward Ho!

Competition starts at 0800.
