The South Western Counties Golf Association Championship tees off with three cracking derby matches over the Church Course at St Enodoc Golf Club today.
Recently crowned Cornwall champion Joe Cruise – from host club St Enodoc – and Devon ace Jake Burnage (Saunton GC) get the week-long tournament underway at 0815 when they meet in the top of the order singles match as the cross-Tamar derby rivals clash on day one.
Today's opening singles match should set the standard – and tone – for a special week of amateur golf on the North Cornwall coast especially as the forecast is set fair, certainly for today’s opening three inter-county derbies.
Second off are border rivals Somerset and Dorset – at 0915 – followed by Gloucestershire and Wiltshire at 1015.
Spearheaded by England ace Josh Hilleard, Somerset swept all aside last summer at Bristol & Clifton winning the inter-county Match Play Shield as well as qualifying for the England County Finals as South West Stroke Play team champions.
Farrington Golf Club’s Hilleard won the coveted Clifford Burden Trophy with nine match play points following an outstanding, winning week.
County team-mate Jamie Clare was not far behind as Somerset dominated the week. Clare from Wells Golf Club and Gloucestershire’s Andy Hale (Chipping Sodbury GC) both scored eight points.
Weymouth’s Tom Robson won the individual South West amateur title following a play-off win over Clevedon’s Ali Balcombe and both feature in today’s starting line-ups as Dorset face Somerset.
